Dr Murphy and colleagues are all fully qualified GPs who maintain membership of a variety of medical organisations, to remain up to date with advances in medicine and for professional development. The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) is the main professional body for GPs in Ireland.
This article by Dr Sinead Murphy is published in the Irish Times of September 9th 2015
General practice has changed since my father began his career in the late 1970s. When Dr Murphy snr applied for his first post, more than 70 GPs applied and every one of them wanted that job.
When he retired five years ago, a small handful of GPs showed an interest in taking over his busy country practice. Dozens of GP posts now remain unfilled for want of a single applicant........
You may have seen our recent news article on Quippe Medical from Melbourne and their clever range of diabetic products.
We asked Cian Murphy if he would write a guest blog for us to tell us a little more about the company and how it all started. Please spread the word and hopefully we can help make other boys lives a bit easier too...
Take it away, Cian....
The Government have been told, but they are in denial and still following their own misguided agenda when they could be listening to GPs on the ground.......
We offer a comprehensive range of GP services. You can get advice and treatment for a wide range of common and less common medical symptoms and illnesses.
Whatever your foot problem is we have an in-house specialist who can help.
Our GP’s offer cryotherapy (quick freeze to minus 190C) for verrucae and warts, and with a staff of runners, cyclists and rugby types we can generally advise on anything not mentioned above. If we can’t, we’ll know who can.
Do you feel like your head just isn't working properly recently? Stressed? Feeling down? Unable to concentrate? Avoiding friends or events?
Sleep disturbed? Mind racing? Worried all the time? Suicidal thoughts?
We deal with these problems several times a day. Maybe it's anxiety, depression, a mix of both, insomnia, stress, or something else. GPs are the first port of call to get your problem diagnosed and to get you back on track.
Pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced function of muscles and joints are very common and can have a variety of causes. Whether your sporting activities are starting to catch up with you or maybe you just twisted your ankle on the stairs one of our in-house specialists will be able to advise and help you get back on your feet.
You can book in with one of our GPs by phone or email or directly with a physiotherapist in Galway Bay Physio for evaluation and management of your problems. In some cases, a combined assessment can be arranged with both GP and physio. Some of our GPs do intra-articular joint injection. We routinely consult with our physio on your behalf where appropriate to advise about which treatment option is best (if you don't already have a physio or would just like a second opinion).
We spend a lot of our time diagnosing problems with your private parts, partly because the internet is so bad at this job and partly because these type of problems are very common and our staff are well versed in such matters.
Lumps, bumps, discomfort and discharge are common symptoms and some are even normal but you won't find out how to tell the 'Ah, it'll go away itself' symptoms from the 'Oops, I'm going to have to have a chat with someone' symptoms if you rely on the anonymity of the internet for advice.
There's a very good reason that it takes 10 years to learn to be a GP and 10 minutes to learn how to use Google. So if you're worried, just pick up the phone or send us an email, make an appointment and come and see us.
All consultations are dealt with in the strictest of confidence, in some cases we may not even need to know your name. That's better than asking your best mate to have a look, right?
Our STI Clinic is open every day and our GPs and Nurse are specially trained in this area by the British Association for Sexual Health & HIV
Please ensure that you book an appointment with the doctor if you are worried about something new you have noticed down there, as it will require a diagnosis. We also do cryotherapy for genital warts. If you just want to be tested for STIs for reassurance, you can book with the nurse or doctor.
This is another part of your body where the worry of finding a rash or spot that wasn't there before can be made much worse by asking the man in the internet for advice.
Come and see a GP as there could easily be 10 different diagnoses for 10 people with the same symptoms and we can assure you that Google won't know just by having a quick look. We will know, or we'll know what to do if we don't know.
We offer cryotherapy for warts, verrucae, skin tags and some other conditions and our cryo clinic is open every day.
We can sometimes drain abscesses on the spot (pardon the pun) and some minor surgery procedures such as suturing and removal of skin tags can be carried out in-house. For others, we refer onwards.
Our waiting room is much nicer than sitting in the waiting rooms in hospital and unlike UHG, we don't have ANY waiting lists. (Although the Minister for Health is working on that and unlike his 'Free Healthcare for All' plan he's making swift progress)
Most GPs see several people a day with with digestive problems and there can be 10 different causes for 10 people with the same symptoms. This is why searching for a solution to your vomiting or stomach pain on the internet will typically be of no help.
You need a GP to properly diagnose your condition.
Here in GBMC we also have a Registered Dietitian who specialises in certain digestive problems such as IBS & IBD and who is available by appointment with no long waiting list.
NEW: We can also arrange in-house testing for Helicobacter Pylori if this is suspected by the GP by doing a Urea Breath Test; and Faecal Occult Blood for those ineligible for Bowelscreen Cancer Screening
CervicalCheck (The National Cervical Screening Programme) provides free smear tests to women aged 25 to 60.
We are happy to announce that we now offer lunchtime doctor appointments on Mondays and Thursdays. We are also open late on Thursdays until 6.30pm. In addition we have extended our nurse appointments - now available Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday afternoons, Thursday mornings and Friday mornings.
