What is a Registered Dietitian?

A dietitian is a person who has a Science degree in nutrition or related science and a qualification in dietetics.

In the UK Registered Dietitians (RD) are the only nutrition professionals to be statutorily regulated, and governed by an ethical code, to ensure that they always work to the highest standard.

The title dietitian can only be used by those appropriately trained professionals who have registered with the Health Professions Council and whose details are on the the HPC web site.

A dietitian in Ireland is regulated by a code of conduct and will usually be affiliated with the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute.

Why Choose a Dietitian?

If you're trying to make some changes in your diet to lose weight, better your health or improve your sports performance, getting realistic expert help from a dietitian can really make the difference.

Why choose diet as a therapy?

There is a wealth of good evidence that diet can support our health naturally. The old saying that "you are what you eat" is true and whether diet is your primary or supporting therapy you will gain benefit and improved health by providing the correct nutrition for your body. There is a lot of confusing dietary information out there and I see my role as filtering, evaluating and translating it into an everyday diet.

What will the treatment be like?

In order to design an individual diet therapy I will need to know your past medical and psychiatric history, a little about yourself, how much exercise you get, what  your current diet is like, how you are at the moment and what drugs or remedies you are taking.

How long will it take?

It takes an hour for the initial assessment and 45 minutes for a review appointment. You will have supporting information on the day and if necessary further information will be developed for your specific needs.

What to expect at your appointment.

Clinical conditions and weight management appointments last 1 hour. This will involve an assessment of weight and height and a discussion of your current health issues and your goals.

Behavior and motivational techniques will be used to help you make positive realistic changes. We will devise a realistic dietary plan which will include supporting information, e.g. recipes and monitoring charts. I recommend that people return for follow up in 2-4 weeks for a progress review which will take 45 minutes. From there we can plan what further follow up is appropriate to meet your needs.

Sports nutrition consultations take 1 - 1 1/2 hours. The assessment includes a nutritional and body composition assessment. We will focus on designing a nutrition plan to support your performance and   goals and one that is realistic and fits into your current lifestyle. I recommend a review appointment 3-4 weeks later and also regular body composition reviews.

How much does it cost?

The first consultation costs €80 and takes 1 hour (10%  reduction  for students) and follow up consultation takes 30- 45 minutes and costs between €35 and €50 depending on frequency of follow up required to treat your condition.
